Writer's Digest books had a series called Howdunit where each volume in the series tackled an aspect of crime/mystery writing. A couple in particular struck me as being potentially valuable resources for writing the types of stories we could categorize as post modern pulp.
Armed and Dangerous by Michael Newton. While the subtitle is A Writer's Guide to Weapons, it is really only about firearms. But, it discusses all types, from ancient to modern times.
Deadly Doses by Serita Deborah Stevens. A guide to poisons, very comprehensive.
There are several other titles in the series as well. Just go to Amazon.com and do a search for Howdunit series. Word of warning - avoid at all costs the one called Private Eyes by Hal Blythe! It is absolutely worthless and full of BS. Trust me on this, I know what I'm talking about.
